Head's Corner

Dear Saklan Community:

Sunday’s Open House was a success. Prospective and current families took the opportunity to visit classrooms, speak with teachers and students, and enjoy the guest story-teller, Michael Katz. Kudos and thanks go to the Parents Association for their help and support with this event. The level of excitement and energy was both contagious and impressive.

On Thursday morning I had the opportunity to accompany the Middle School to the Alameda County Food Bank. Middle School students and teachers packaged 2,400lbs of yams, enough to feed 1,920 people. Our work will help feed homeless and low income people and families during Thanksgiving week.

The number of people seeking food assistance has increased dramatically over the past two years. The Alameda County Community Food Bank’s volunteer- operated Food Helpline, which provides same-day emergency food referrals, serves 39% more clients than last year and 70% more clients compared to two years ago. Each month, over 300 new families reach out to the Food Bank for the first time. The Food Bank serves 40,000 people in need each week.

According to their website, http://www.accfb.org/about_hunger.html, children are most vulnerable:

  • 35% of emergency food recipients are children under the age of 18.
  • 25% of client households with children report that their children skipped meals due to a lack of food and money in the previous 12 months.
  • In 38% of client households with children, a parent, a child or both experience hunger.
Seniors make up 18% of the emergency food recipients.

This year the Student Council and Middle School will be sponsoring a food drive with all the proceeds going to the Alameda County Food Bank. Thank you in advance for your support.

Have a great Thanksgiving Break-

David A. Hague
