Dear Saklan Community:

Earlier today I sent out an email with an H1N1 flu update. Below please find the text of my message.

I write to inform you that last night I received notice of a confirmed case of Swine Flu in the Early Childhood Program. We will be implementing the precautions as outlined in our policy, including notifying the community. Please refer to my earlier letter outlining the school’s procedures for additional information. For your convenience, I have attached herewith an informational summary regarding H1N1 influenza.

I will keep you informed as more information becomes available. Should questions arise, please feel free to speak to Mrs. Catanzarite or me.

ADMISSIONS

2010-11 SIBLING APPLICATIONS

Calling all Saklan siblings at all grade levels! Saklan siblings receive priority screening and notification! Sibling applications for the 2010-11 school year will be available for you in the next two weeks. Sibling applications will be due Monday, November 30, 2009. Sibling notification will be sent out early January. If you would like to set up an Admissions appointment to discuss an application for next year, or attend one of the upcoming Groups Tours, please contact me.

UPCOMING GROUP TOURS

Below are the dates for the Oct/Nov Group Tours. Saklan parents are always invited to attend to learn more about an upcoming grade level. If you’d like to attend and/or invite a friend to join you, please contact Admissions.

• Friday, November 13 – Kindergarten Tour
  

*NEW* PRESCHOOL PREVIEW DAYS

Do you know someone who has a rising Preschooler or Pre-Kindergartner? If so, please tell them about our NEW Preschool Preview Days! Prospective parents and their little ones (age 2-3 years) are invited to visit a Preschool class to see, feel and fully experience Saklan’s ECE program. Parents will be required to stay with their child during the visit. This is also a great opportunity for current parents to visit the program with a sibling. Reservations are required. Preview days will be:

• Wednesday, Oct. 14, 8:45-9:45
• Wednesday, Nov 11, 8:45-9:45
• Wednesday, Jan 20, 8:45-9:45

Open House

SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, November 15th, 2:00 – 4:00 pm WHAT: Saklan Open House WHERE: Saklan Valley School

Explore Saklan! Open House is an all-campus event and everyone in the community is encouraged to attend! Presentations, tours and information tables will be available for all audiences: current students, prospective students, and parents! Open House is a great opportunity to come together as a community, visit in your child’s classroom, and take time to learn about the next grade level. Mark your calendars now. Remember – our best form of advertising is word of mouth.

SAVE THE DATE: Thursday, November 5th 7:00 - 8:00pm WHAT: “What Parents can do to Ensure Student Success”               by Dr. Pedro Noguera WHERE: First Congregational Church of Oakland               2501 Harrison Street, Oakland

As a member of EBISA, the East Bay Independent School Association, Saklan is one of the sponsors of the upcoming EBISA Speaker Event. All parents/guardians, educators and students are welcome to attend. Dr. Pedro Noguera is a professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University. There is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person, no RSVP necessary.

Parent Association Update

Dear Saklan Parents,

Mark Your Calendars! The next Parent Association Meeting is Friday, October 16th, after Flag. A representative from Children's Choice will join us to talk about nutrition and the Children’s Choice lunch program.

Next Parent Coffee is Friday, October 30th, directly after Flag and during the Halloween Parade! You don’t want to miss the Saklan Halloween Parade! Bring your camera!
