FRiday Note - April-16-2010

Head's Corner

Dear Saklan Community:

Welcome back!  We are back at it.

This week I had the opportunity to visit the fourth grade at Coloma-an excellent trip.  The kids were really into the theme-based activities and camp environment.  Our students were, once again, amazing.  Their behavior, intense concentration, and poise were outstanding.  Many thanks to the chaperones, Marianne Haesloop, Rachel Fields, Lisa Rokas, and Charlie Martin, for their enthusiastic participation and infinite patience.

This Saturday is the Student Council Rummage Sale.  We have been collecting many treasures that our parents, teachers, and students have graciously donated to the cause.  Please come join us from 8:30-2:00 to support our Student Council.  Funds are to support the Carnival in May.

Coming-up next week are two more events: Earth Day and Saklan Follies.  Earth Day, April 22nd, is a Family Group event.  The theme this year is local sustainable food; making good nutritional and environmental choices.  The Saklan Follies are on Friday starting at 10:30 in the church next door.  This year’s show promises some surprises.  Come join us.

Next week is also Teacher Appreciation Week.  The Parents Association spends the week spoiling the faculty and staff rotten.  The culmination of the week is a lunch at Postino’s in Lafayette.  In order for this to come to fruition for all staff members, this Friday is Noon Dismissal with no Extended Day.

Enjoy the sun while it is still with us-

PA News Update - "Race To Nowhere"

Please Note:

The "Race To Nowhere" film info has been changed!
The New Date, Time and Place are as follows:

  • When: Friday, April 23 at 7:15 pm

  • Where: Orinda Theater
(as part of the California Independent Film Festival)

Please pick up your NEW, free tickets at the front desk.
We apologize for any inconvenience,

Your Parent Association.

Original announcement below:

The Parents Association is proud to announce that we have purchased 60 tickets to the April 23rd showing of the documentary, "Race to Nowhere" at the Dean Lesher Center in Walnut Creek. This documentary focuses on the culture of overachievement and the stress and effects that it is having on our children. It was directed by a local filmmaker and focuses on many of our local high schools and middle schools.

The tickets are being given to Saklan Families for FREE. They are valued at $20 each (and can be purchased through racetonowhere.com for that amount if you have friends who would like to attend). They will be in the front office and will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. They are limited to 2 per family and we ask that since tickets are limited, please only take what you can use. If your plans change, please return the tickets to the front office so that someone else can use them.

Following the show, the director will be holding an open discussion, and on April 29, we will be hosting an "Evening with Dave Hague" to discuss the movie, overachievement and our school. In addition, we have purchased 4 copies of the book The Overachievers which you can find in the front office. This book serves as a wonderful complement to the movie and if you can't make the movie, explores many of the same themes. As always, once you are finished with a copy of the book, please return it to the front office so that others can read them.

If you have any questions, please contact

The 2009-2010 Annual Giving Fund

We Are All In This Together: Goal: $130,000

Our Annual Giving fund is our top annual fundraising priority because it helps close the gap between tuition and the increasing cost of school operations.

It provides essential flexibility and maximum benefit in directing resources to the areas of greatest need, such as teacher salaries. With your generous support, we are able to retain talented faculty, support language, art and music programs and fund needed facility improvements as well as our financial aid program.

We invite you to help sustain our wonderful school through your generous support of our Annual Giving Fund each year. All gifts, large and small, directly benefit current students. You donation is put to immediate use on campus for your child today!

Thank you for your support of Saklan.
