FRiday Note - June-05-2009
From The Head of School
Dear Saklan Community:
This last week has been an exciting one for students and adults. I have spent several mornings visiting classes, observing excellent presentations, speaking with engaged, intelligent, and excited students, and examining excellent papers and projects. I am impressed with the poise and confidence of your children and the quality and depth of their writing. Great kids, excellent teachers-a terrific combination.
Several weeks ago, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth held their awards ceremony that recognizes students “who have distinguished themselves through special testing as among the most academically gifted students in the country”. I am pleased to share with you that two of our students earned Certificates for High Honors. Well deserved congratulations go to David Kuckuk (fifth grade) and Spencer Lekki (fourth grade).
If you get a chance, please visit the courtyard by the middle school area. The mural has been installed; it looks great. This mural is a cooperative effort of grades 1-8 and is a product of a Family Group activity during Saklan’s celebration of Earth Day. You will also notice the new chairs. These redecorated chairs are compliments of the eighth grade and were completed during art class. Many thanks to the students and Ms. Brooks for their creative additions to the look of the school.
I close with a quick reminder of upcoming events listed below. Please come join us for graduation.

From the Library
Please help your child find their lost/missing/overdue library book(s). In some cases, books that could not be located for a number of weeks were marked as "lost" or "missing" in the automated system to allow your child to check out. Inventory will begin the week of May 31st, so your assistance in locating and returning all library books is greatly appreciated
Please contact me via email kmoebius@saklan.org with any questions.
Thank you,
Mrs. Moebius/Librarian

Rummage Sale
Dear Saklan Community:
We don’t need to raise a barn exactly, but…
We can think about the three R’s…
Reuse, recycle and raise money
A group of parents have been brainstorming about ways to raise funds for the school.
We’ve decided to have a huge** rummage sale this summer. All proceeds will directly benefit the school.
The dates of the sale will be Saturday, August 1 – Sunday August 2.
We will hold it in my yard. We chose this location because it’s close to Lamorinda, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Concord and Martinez.
- PLEASE think about what you might be able to donate.
- (We have parents who have volunteered to pick-up stuff from you house if you can’t bring it to mine.)
- PLEASE think about possibly working at the event. We’ll need people to sort, tag and then work at the sale.
- ALSO…PLEASE think about stopping by to buy.
- AND FINALLY…PLEASE tell lots of people about what an AMAZING sale it will be.
THANKS SO MUCH!!
My location is 3293 Withers Avenue in Lafayette. (I’m literally across the street from Pleasant Hill).
Please let me or another co-chair know if you can help, donate, etc. etc. etc. (We need a lot of the etc.)
The co-chairs of this event are:
- Eliza Kirkpatrick
- Lisa Rokas
- Annie Barendregt
- Pat and John Lawicki
(YOU TOO COULD BE A CO-CHAIR…)
Thanks so much,
Diane Wilcox
Uniform Exchange:
Do you have drawers full of Saklan uniform clothes that are too small? Please donate them to our uniform exchange! We are collecting gently used uniform pants, shorts, shirts, sweatshirts, skirts and jumpers for our uniform exchange program which will continue throughout the summer. Look for our table out in front of school. Please feel free to look through the clothes that have been donated and take any you can use. You can get an early start on your back to school shopping for next school year.
Saklan instrumental music program
The Saklan instrumental music program continues in the summer and is open to both new and continuing students. Lessons are given either at school or in your home, and are scheduled around your vacations and summer activities. A registration letter can be downloaded here.
